Putting safety first: Your safety plan.

If you are thinking of leaving your abuser for a women’s shelter or friend’s house, we will be here every step of the way. You can call us at 612-724-8823 or send us a private message at any time. One of the first things we do at our women’s shelter is to start making your safety plan. Here are some things you can do.

  • Call us at 612-724-8823. Our 24/7 multilingual support line is here to help you make a plan. You can also take the other proactive steps listed here.

  • Open a bank account in your name, and start saving money. Have the bank send statements to a friend’s house, or tell them not to send statements and just check the account in person or online.

  • We suggest getting a prepaid cell phone that your abuser does not know about. Prepaid phones usually do not require paperwork or registration of names.

  • Ask a safe neighbor to call the police if they hear a lot of noise. If there is a domestic assault, have a women’s shelter in mind to go to.

  • Leave money, keys, important documents for yourself & children (passport, birth certificates, marriage certificate, immigration paperwork including green card and I-94), and a change of clothing for you and your children with a friend or trusted family so you can leave quickly.

  • Get as much support as you can from those you trust: neighbors, family, friends, school officials, women’s shelter advocates. The more people you know, and who know your situation, the safer you will be.
